TRAVEL BY CAR
Driving is by far the easiest and most popular way to reach Waipū.
From Auckland:
Hop on State Highway 1 heading north. The journey takes around 1 hour 45 minutes without stops, but we recommend taking it slow — grab a coffee in Kaiwaka or Mangawhai, and stop at the Brynderwyn Hills lookout for sweeping views across Bream Bay.From Whangārei:
Just 43 minutes south on SH1, making Waipū an easy weekend or day trip from the city.
Local tip: Summer weekends can get busy on the main roads — leaving early in the day helps beat the traffic.
TRAVEL BY BUS
BusLink Bream Bay Link: Regional Shuttle Option
Operated by BusLink with support from Northland Regional Council, the Bream Bay Link runs only on Thursdays, offering both morning and afternoon services connecting Kaiwaka, Mangawhai, Langs Beach, Waipū Cove, Waipū, Ruakākā, and WhangāreI.
Morning: Departs Kaiwaka at 9:00 am, reaching Waipū around 9:50 am, and arriving in Whangārei by 10:50 am.
Afternoon: Returns from Whangārei at 3:00 pm, reaching Waipū at about 4:00 pm.
Fares are very affordable — approximately $6.50 one-way or $9.00 return for the Waipū–Whangārei leg — with SuperGold and Community Services Card concessions available.

InterCity: Auckland ↔ Waipū
A daily InterCity bus departs from Auckland Central to Waipū, with booking available through InterCity’s official site. The journey is comfortable, often includes free Wi-Fi, and offers scenic views along the way.

InterCity: Whangārei ↔ Waipū
InterCity offers three direct services daily between Whangārei and Waipū, with a journey time of around 34 minutes and a fare range of $17–$45.
This frequent and reasonably priced option makes Waipū easily accessible without a car, especially for visitors staying overnight or making regional connections.

By Air
If you’re arriving from outside Northland, the closest airport to Waipū is Whangārei Airport (WRE), located just 30–35 minutes’ drive from Waipū Village. The airport offers regular domestic flights from Auckland, Wellington, and Christchurch, with services operated by Air New Zealand.
For international visitors, the main gateway is Auckland Airport (AKL), about 1 hour 45 minutes south of Waipū by car. From Auckland Airport, travellers can either hire a car, catch an InterCity bus north, or book a connecting flight to Whangārei before continuing to Waipū by car or regional bus.
Car rental desks are available at both airports, and in Whangārei you’ll also find local shuttle services and taxis for direct transfers to Waipū and Bream Bay accommodations. Pre-booking is highly recommended if you need a private transfer, as rural areas like Waipū don’t have the same rideshare coverage you’d find in bigger cities.
