Plan your Trip to Waipu

Your Complete Travel Guide

Tucked along Northland’s stunning Bream Bay coastline, Waipū is the kind of place that feels like a well-kept secret — long golden beaches, glowworm caves, rich Scottish heritage, and a relaxed holiday vibe. But while it’s only a short drive from Auckland or Whangārei, getting here (and making the most of your time) takes a bit of planning.

This guide covers how to get to Waipū from all directions, the best ways to get around once you’re here, and plenty of tips and local insights to make your trip smooth and stress-free.

TRAVEL BY CAR

Driving is by far the easiest and most popular way to reach Waipū.

  • From Auckland:
Hop on State Highway 1 heading north. The journey takes around 1 hour 45 minutes without stops, but we recommend taking it slow — grab a coffee in Kaiwaka or Mangawhai, and stop at the Brynderwyn Hills lookout for sweeping views across Bream Bay.

  • From Whangārei:
Just 43 minutes south on SH1, making Waipū an easy weekend or day trip from the city.

Local tip: Summer weekends can get busy on the main roads — leaving early in the day helps beat the traffic.

By Air

If you’re arriving from outside Northland, the closest airport to Waipū is Whangārei Airport (WRE), located just 30–35 minutes’ drive from Waipū Village. The airport offers regular domestic flights from Auckland, Wellington, and Christchurch, with services operated by Air New Zealand.

For international visitors, the main gateway is Auckland Airport (AKL), about 1 hour 45 minutes south of Waipū by car. From Auckland Airport, travellers can either hire a car, catch an InterCity bus north, or book a connecting flight to Whangārei before continuing to Waipū by car or regional bus.

Car rental desks are available at both airports, and in Whangārei you’ll also find local shuttle services and taxis for direct transfers to Waipū and Bream Bay accommodations. Pre-booking is highly recommended if you need a private transfer, as rural areas like Waipū don’t have the same rideshare coverage you’d find in bigger cities.

Getting Around Waipū

Waipū itself is small and easy to explore on foot, but many of its best attractions are scattered along the coast or in the nearby hills. Here’s how to make the most of your visit:

Shuttles & Taxis

  • Some local accommodation providers offer shuttle services for guests heading to walking tracks or beaches.

  • Taxis and rideshares are available but limited — Waipū isn’t the kind of place you can rely on Uber for last-minute rides.

Tip: If you know you’ll need a taxi, book ahead to avoid long waits, especially on weekends or evenings.

Cycling & Walking

Waipū is compact enough to cycle around, and the surrounding countryside is perfect for e-bikes if you want to explore at a slower pace.

  • Cycling: Bring or hire a bike for short rides between the village, beaches, and lookouts.

  • Walking: There are fantastic trails like the Waipū Coastal Walkway and Waipū River Walk, but attractions like the caves and Piroa Falls are better reached by car before you start walking.

Car or Campervan

If you have your own wheels, you can reach everything from Waipū Cove Beach to the Waipū Caves, Langs Beach, Uretiti Beach, and Piroa Falls without relying on public transport.

  • Plenty of free parking is available at major spots, including Waipū Cove and the caves.

  • Many travellers stay at holiday parks or DOC campsites, which often have space for campervans and easy beach access.

Parking & Practical Tips

  • Waipū Cove Beach: Large carpark near the surf club; fills quickly in summer.

  • Waipū Caves: Free parking right near the track entrance; no toilets on site.

  • Uretiti Beach & DOC Campsites: Parking available at camping areas with direct beach access.

Observation: Summer holidays bring more cars — early mornings and late afternoons are quieter for parking and beach visits.
